Summary

About the Position: This position is aboard a hopper dredge. The Portland District's hopper dredges Yaquina and Essayons, work to ensure a safe "highway" for ships and other vessels. The hopper dredge is a specialized sea-going vessel designed to dredge and transport dredged material from ocean bars, fast flowing rivers and isolated harbors to open-water disposal areas.

This is a Direct Hire solicitation.

Duties

Help
  • Operate and maintain shipboard electronics systems including navigation, communications, and shipboard computer network hardware and software.
  • Maintain and integrate computers and Local Area Networks (LAN).
  • Ensure proper and effective operation of the Dredge's electronic equipment and systems by means of basic and electronic troubleshooting.
  • Hands on maintenance and repairs.
  • Collect and use applicable electronic methods to reformat data throughout the vessel.
  • Report on problems encountered on the various systems and equipment.
  • Track maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate records of faults and repairs.
  • Ensure spare parts and components for all systems are available.
  • Calibrate equipment for the most efficient use of resources.
  • Work with and assist the vessel's electrician(s) as needed.
  • Operate with the ships Lockout Tag-out system and other safety programs.

  • Requires a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) with a wiper or higher endorsement, and a (QMED) Qualified Member of the Engine Department with valid Electricians Endorsement within 24 months of entrance on duty.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic - Direct Hire~ without more than normal supervision. Qualified applicants for this position must have the ability or potential ability to maintain and repair 1) Ship Navigation Equipment and systems including radars, Fathometers, Speed Logs, GPS's, Weather Fax, Navtex, etc; and 2) Ship Communication Systems including Global Marine and Distress Safety System, PBX system, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's), etc. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Requires a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) with a wiper or higher endorsement, and a (QMED) Qualified Member of the Engine Department with valid Electricians Endorsement within 24 months of entrance on duty.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves standing, climbing, kneeling, bending in occasionally cramped and awkward positions and in high locations. Continually handles objects weighing from 5 to 40 lbs. occasionally up to 50 lbs. Will be exposed to high voltage systems. Medical certification of fitness for sea duty is required. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to work in low fairly low light conditions in order to perform duties. Must be able to participate in normal crew emergency duties such as fire fighting, damage control, man overboard and others.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: While living and working aboard the Dredge the incumbent may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, vessel movement, heat, cold, and noise. There is a danger of slippery decks and drowning. Must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required and comply with COE, OSHA, USCG and other safety practices and requirements. May be exposed to Voltages from 5 to 2400V, hot pipes, escaping steam and the effects of acids, fumes, solvents, heavy metals, hydrocarbon fuels and paints, radioactive sources, among other materials.
