The following are the duties of this position at the GS-11. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Archives Specialist, you will:

  • Carry out a wide variety of complex actions required to transfer the legal and physical custody of federal agency or court records to NARA. Incumbent uses and analyzes data in ERA, CMRS, Archives and Records Centers Information System (ARCIS), and HMS to accomplish accessioning.
  • Carry out a wide range of actions required for processing archival records according to NARA policies, procedures, and standards. Actions include description projects which involve gathering specific information about records, writing descriptions of records applying NARA's Lifecycle Data standards, and entering descriptions into DAS.
  • Provide public services to individuals, agencies, and organizations in order to provide access to NARA's holdings. Public services may include facilitating in-person use of records in a NARA research room, providing reproduction services, and providing written and oral reference assistance.
  • Assume point-of-contact (POC) duties for some office administrative tasks, such as: maintaining the office file plan, procurement/supply responsibilities, property, and trust fund accounting. Coordinates with business support staff to expedite facility administration and program operation in these areas. Compiles statistical data for required periodic reports in written and/or electronic form.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include some ascending caster equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable periods of maintaining a stationary position, moving, or otherwise positioning oneself to access objects, equipment, or records located in high and low places.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

To be qualified for this position at the GS-09 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes:- Utilizing a wide range of systems or databases to search beyond readily accessible material to analyze, index, and manage records; AND- Performing record maintenance and preservation in adherence with archival principles, procedures, or record keeping practices.

OR EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such adegree OR LL.B. or J.D., if related.

OR COMBINATION: You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.

you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes:-Performing record maintenance and preservation in adherence with archival principles, procedures and record keeping practices; AND-Providing customer service or guidance with record research and access services.

OR EDUCATION: 1 full year of graduate level education.

OR SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Based on a Bachelors degree that is demonstrated through class standing (upper 1/3 of class); grade point average (3.0/4.0 overall or 3.5/4.0 in major), or election to membership in a qualifying national scholastic honor society.

OR COMBINATION: You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the specialized experience requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the educational requirement must equal at least 100 percent.
