The Office of General Counsel's (OGC) mission is to provide legal services, based on the highest professional and ethical standards, that support and facilitate creating strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes. OGC is a nationwide office comprised of approximately 375 attorneys in Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; 10 regional offices; and over 20 field offices around the country. The HUD OGC Externship Program ("Externship Program") allows law students to gain practical, hands-on experience working on housing issues and administrative law.
In Headquarters, in Washington, DC, a Student Volunteer (Extern) will learn about the work of the Divisions within OGC and the roles and responsibilities of the attorneys who complete the work. Depending on the office, externs will have the opportunity to work with attorneys to answer client questions, address administrative law or programmatic questions, or assist in defensive, civil rights, fair housing, or other enforcement litigation, on behalf of the Department.

In a Regional or Field Office, a Student Volunteer (Extern) will have the opportunity to work on a wide array of legal assignments to further the programmatic goals in the Region or Field Office, including litigation, real estate transactional work, and HUD program support. The legal work of externs may include involvement in civil litigation, administrative proceedings, foreclosures, multifamily transactions, employee and labor relations, bankruptcy, fair housing enforcement and compliance actions, tort claims, and Freedom of Information Act legal reviews. Extern may also have the opportunity to conduct legal research related to HUD authorities and other government-wide statutes. A student may apply to multiple offices within OGC, per the directions below on "How to Apply." Externships are unpaid, academic credit is available. Academic credit policies vary by the academic institution, so please check with the student's law school.
Must be enrolled at least part-time at an accredited academic institution.
Must maintain status as a current student in good standings during the internship.

Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation.

You MUST submit academic transcripts demonstrating that you meet the eligibility requirements.

Education
Must be enrolled at least part-time in a juris doctorate or LLM program at an American Bar Association accredited law school.
Must maintain status as a current student in good standings during your externship.

This is a volunteer position and does not qualify for benefits. However, students may receive academic credit if their law schools allow it. This credit is strictly at the discretion of the school.
