The selectee will serve as a Student Trainee (Psychology) in the Office of Human Resources, Human Resources Research and Assessment Division.  Typical work assignments include:

  • Assisting with portions of research or practical projects (i.e. individual segments of a larger project); and helping to address problems in human resource management and development.
  • Assisting with survey planning and design to designed populations; conducting studies to determine the predictive effectiveness of existing test for specific occupations. 
  • Assisting senior members in tasks of limited scope and complexity related to the development and validation of special-purpose test and related instruments for application to specific and general examining needs. 
  • Assisting with data collection to support human capital research efforts.

If selected for this position, you must:

  • Obtain and maintain a Top-Secret Tier 5 clearance. For more information visit OPM Mythbuster Page.
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 undergraduate; or 3.0 graduate at time of application and throughout internship appointment.
  • Be at least 16 years or older at the time of appointment.
  • Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
  • Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.
  • Sign a Pathways Participant Agreement upon entrance on duty.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the education requirements and Selective Placement Factor listed below.  

GS-05: You qualify for the GS-05 level (starting salary $45,146) if you possess the following:

  • Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

GS-07: You qualify for the GS-7 level (starting salary $55,924) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level performing duties such as using statistical techniques to evaluate qualitative and quantitative data; and assisting with conducting research studies related to organizational topics. OR

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education OR

Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree in psychology or related field of study.

GS-09: You qualify for the GS-9 level (starting salary $68,405) if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level performing duties such as assisting with conducting research studies on various organizational topics; assisting in the collection of data that supports human capital research efforts; and using social science research theories, assessment theories, leadership theories, and/or survey design methodology. OR

Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education OR

Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

AND

Selective Placement Factor:  Major in Psychology or related field of study. 

Students must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the internship (Applicants must be actively enrolled at an accredited institution). Applicants that have graduated or will graduate prior to the completion of the internship are ineligible to participate without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Program participants may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements.  To be eligible for conversion, a Student Trainee Intern must:

  • Successfully complete academic course of study
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the the Internship Program
  • Meet OPM qualification standards for the position the Intern will be converted
  • Maintain acceptable performance under the agency's approved performance management system
  • Receive favorable recommendation for conversion from Supervisor

It is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will decide to opt for conversion.
