Help

As the Deputy Center Director for the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Working directly with the Center Director to provide day-to-day operations management for the science center, including development of work plans and the undertaking of planning, coordination, and leadership activities necessary to support the Center's science, operations, and administration programs.
  • Ensuring operational accountability, including annual budget planning and execution, IT security, funds management, procurement, property control, safety, personnel issues, delivery of science products, and performance reporting.
  • Working with the Center Director to coordinate the center's scientific proposal process for competing for research funding from USGS national programs.
  • Managing and coordinating the preparation of center responses for specific information requests about ongoing and proposed center research activities that address USGS area, regional, and national programs.
  • Serving as acting Center Director in the absence of the Center Director.
  • Supervising, mentoring, and guiding staff and performing the full scope of supervisory duties that include but are not limited to hiring, training, developing performance standards, dealing with performance issues, assigning work, establishing priorities, etc.
  • Operating a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands:
The work is primarily sedentary in nature, although visits to field locations require walking, climbing and standing for extended periods may be necessary. Also, the work requires occasional travel, both domestically and overseas, with demanding schedules.

Work Environment:
Most of the work is in an office setting; however, travel is required to attend meetings, conferences, and make field reviews of contractors/cooperatives monitoring.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

This is an interdisciplinary position that can be filled as a Supervisory Geophysicist or a Supervisory Geologist.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOPHYSICIST 1313: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOLOGIST 1350: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. FOR GS-14: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in earthquake research activities that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert on earthquake or relevant geoscience topics for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations are accepted by others as those of a technical expert. At this level, the individual typically is an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, is called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect earthquake research and hazard programs, makes long range and controversial proposals and defends their findings and recommendations in public or high-level forums.
