Duties

Help
  • You will serve as Director of of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC).
  • AHEC is a national resource comprising an extensive archive of soldier memoirs, photographs and unit records; a high-quality museum; and the largest library in the U.S. Army.
  • As part of the U.S. Army War College, AHEC provides historical support to graduate professional military education courses, engages with the American public, and supports national and international researchers.
  • You will provide leadership and strategic vision, plan, direct, and administer all programs and activities of the Center, including archival, library, museum, public and educational programs.
  • Manage a diverse workforce and organizational budget.
  • Maintain close working relationships with the other schools, centers, institutes, and programs that comprise the U.S. Army War College.
  • Develop cooperative relationships and partnership ventures with academic and other institutions in support of the AHECs mission and goals.
  • Conduct extensive public relations in support of the AHEC mission.
  • Work closely with the supporting non-profit Army Heritage Foundation.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Qualifications

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 4 years starting on or about summer 2024. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible earn annual leave and sick leave.

Qualification Requirements:

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated on the criteria listed below:

1. Ability to lead a complex organization in support of other complex organizations.

  • Experience in enterprise leadership with demonstrated ability to lead a diverse and highly educated organization.
  • Experience working with complex digital knowledge management tools, finding aids, and/or information management systems.
  • Demonstrated performance directing the development and execution of distinct and complex operations and organizations.
  • Candidates should have experience in at least one of the following: library operations, archives, museum operations, and/ or public history. -
  • Proficiency in executing budgets, managing personnel and facilities management.

2. Ability to establish an organizational vision and to implement it in a continuously changing environment. -

  • Skilled in developing long-term strategies and plans for libraries, archives, outreach activities and/or museums.
  • Ability to ability to effectively lead change.

3. Demonstrated Ability in Leading People.

  • Experience fostering an environment that enables people who are culturally different (race, age, sex, level of education, life-style choices, belief systems, etc.) to work together cooperatively and effectively.

4. History Minded and Leader Development Focused.

  • Possesses a passion and deep appreciation for military history.
  • Active involvement in professional networks relevant to archives, libraries, military history, and/or museums.

5. Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, shape, and positively influence various actions and initiatives.
  • Graduate degree in a field that relates to the AHEC mission or duties of the director is strongly preferred.

Situational telework is approved on a case-by-case basis, where the hours worked were not part of a previously approved, ongoing, and regular telework schedule.
