Duties

Help
  • Collects and compiles forest and woodland management data regarding location, size, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber.
  • Inspects and reports on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements.
  • Marks or otherwise designates timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposals.
  • Compiles maps of forest and woodland areas, cutover areas, burned areas, and special use areas.
  • Examines timber stands to determine need for, or thoroughness of, insect and disease control work.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

For GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting in checking extensive data relating to the survey/study area; helping collect forestry samples; or observing and recording specific biological information (i.e., vegetative cover, water quality samples, flora, or fauna).

Education: You must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than six semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

For GS-6: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: following specific instructions to independently check extensive data relating to the survey/study area; collecting forestry samples; or assisting in examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control work.

Education: You must have completed one year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate-level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

For GS-7: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-6 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting in inspecting cutover areas on current sales for compliance with terms of timber sales contracts; assisting in investigating suspected timber trespass cases including locating and identifying trespass sites, quantities, etc.; and examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control work.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate-level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent fieldwork requiring a considerable amount of walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough and slippery terrain, wet weather, insects, snakes, deadfalls and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
