Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Policy on Hiring STEM Students to recruit and appoint qualified students to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Multiple vacancies will be filled in pay bands DB-01 and/or DB-02 through Direct Hire Authority under Section 1105, 2015 National Defense Authorization Act and Section 1104, 2016 National Defense Authorization Act.

  • Student Trainee positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training.
  • As a student trainee, you will serve in a role in a professional discipline under close supervision with a team leader and/or supervisor.
  • Tasks will vary but may include the following:
  • Preparing drawings, graphs or charts using project data.
  • Performing routine scientific and engineering computations using knowledge obtained from academic progress to date.
  • Operating or adjusting various types of laboratory equipment and overseeing the function of the laboratory operation required.
  • Collecting data for research purposes and using this data to prepare reports with conclusions related to projects.
  • Entering data into databases and tracking information to provide recommendations for continued project execution.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • Upon selection, must submit an official transcript or proof of enrollment/acceptance.
  • Must maintain enrollment status and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent). Must provide unofficial transcripts each semester or quarter, as applicable, to supervisor for verification of continued eligibility.
  • Must be available to routinely travel back and forth daily between residence and duty location.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: Students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a program of undergraduate or graduate instruction leading to a bachelor's or advanced degree in a Physical Science course of study at an institution of higher education. Students enrolled in a 2-year college parallel (or equivalent) program designed specifically for transfer to a 4-year institution to complete a STEM program degree.

In order to qualify, you must:

  • Possess and maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Maintain eligibility for the STEM Student program after initial appointment.
  • Furnish a copy of your OFFICIAL transcript or letter of acceptance if accepted.
Students appointed under this authority will be aligned to a pay band commensurate with the highest level of education completed and/or prior experience.

Students retain eligibility for this program as long as they continue to meet the definition of "student," and are eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent scientific or engineering position after graduation, provided the student meets all eligibility criteria and the Office of Personnel Management qualification requirements for the position.

Student trainees may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent position upon graduation if they complete their educational requirements; meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standard, including any applicable positive education requirement and/or selective placement factors and any other special qualifications requirements and conditions of employment; and perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations.

In cases where the student fails to maintain the ERDC academic requirement of a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, the student will be given one semester to elevate their GPA to an acceptable level before being terminated from the program.
