Summary

We are seeking current students to work full-time or part-time in various locations across the nation during the summer of 2024 NTE 9/30/2024. The summer intern positions are announced under the Pathways Student Internship Program. This Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions with opportunities to explore Federal careers during summer months.

Looking for a challenging and rewarding summer internship? Look no further! As a summer intern, you will be an integral part of our team, actively participating and assisting in various agency tasks to support our day-to-day operations. With assignments that vary, you will be tasked with researching problem areas within our work program, and your involvement in the development of background information will help us determine alternative approaches to solve problems.

You will be vital in performing a range of administrative duties for our organization, including but not limited to:

GS-399-03 Duties:

  • Compiling data for reports, charts or records extracting data from documents and posting or tabulating data to work sheets or other office records.

  • Composing brief memoranda from draft documents or discussions provided by the supervisor or higher-level employee. Proofreading memoranda to ensure they include proper grammar and punctuation.

  • Reading material and files by content subject; assisting users in locating and retrieving all material required for reports or responses to external inquiries.

  • Reviewing forms submitted to the office for processing; ensuring completeness, verifying data entered and checking for all supporting documentation. 

GS-0399-04 Duties: 

  • Assisting with program duties, gaining knowledge of the organizational rules, procedures, operations, or business practices.

  • Ensuring that prompt, professional, and timely program service to agency customers and contacts is provided.

  • Compiling statistical data for reports, charts or records extracting data from documents and posting or tabulating data to work sheets or other office records. Verifying accuracy of computations or computing quantities such as totals subtotals, percentages, averages, and balances. 

  • Composing correspondence of a routine and non-technical nature based upon oral instructions, brief notes, or information which is readily available in the files and records of the office.

  • Proofreading memoranda to ensure they include proper grammar and punctuation.

  • Performing assignments using various automated data systems. Collecting and consolidating program information and data. Assisting in the utilization and update of reports for tracking processes and capturing organizational information. 

  • Reviewing forms submitted to the office; ensuring completeness, verifying data entered and checking for all supporting documentation.

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Submit proof that you are either (1) enrolled in Summer 2024; (2) enrolled in the Fall 2024 semester, or (3) have been accepted for enrollment in the Fall 2024 semester.
  • Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non­Career SES employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the HR Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service.
  • Provide a copy of your most recent transcripts (unofficial) at the end of each academic year, or upon request, for verification of enrollment and academic standing.
  • Register with the Selective Service, if you are a male born after 12/31/1959
  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 1 investigation level).
  • Have your identity and work status eligibility verified if you are not a GSA employee.  We will use the Department of Homeland Security’s e-Verify system for this. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.
  • Signed participant agreement is required for employment under this Program.

The salary range differs based on location.  Special salary ranges can be viewed here.  Generally, first time appointees to Federal civilian service have their salary set at the beginning rate of the grade for which they are selected; unless prior approval has been received to adjust the salary based on superior qualifications of the applicant.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements by May 31, 2024. To qualify, you must demonstrate the following:

At the GS-3:  Completion of one full academic year of post-high school study OR six months of progressively responsible clerical, office or other experience which indicates an ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the clerical position to be filled OR a combination of education and experience.  

At the GS-4:  Completion of two full academic years of post-high-school study OR an associate's degree OR one year of clerical, office or other experience which indicates an ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the clerical position to be filled OR a combination of education and experience.

NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours/45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university program.

Education

Qualifying educational institutions/programs for Pathways include: a high school/GED whose curriculum has been approved by a state or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum; and any accredited technical or vocational school, 2- or 4-year college or university, a graduate or professional school, or a post-secondary home-school curriculum.

A post-secondary certificate program must have been completed at a qualifying educational institution equivalent to at least 1 academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Note: If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education. You will be scored on the questions you answer during the application process, which will measure your possession of the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to use applicable agency automated systems to gather, format and analyze various management and organizational information and create routine reports.

  • Knowledge and skill in operating computers and using various computer software programs, as well as the ability to perform a variety of functions within each software type to create and revise a wide range of documents, databases, reports, etc.

  • Ability to coordinate and complete different phases of work assignments in a timely manner.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and basic English composition to prepare material in final form; knowledge of formats, administrative procedures, and terminology of the organizational unit to which assigned.

Your answers to the questions will be used to place you in one of the following categories and standard score ranges: 
  • Best Qualified = Candidates scoring between 95 - 100
  • Well Qualified = Candidates scoring between 85 - 94
  • Qualified = Candidates scoring between 70 - 84
