Duties

Help
  • You will install, modify, repair new/existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment; steam-heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems; steam generators; flash and expansion tanks; condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators.
  • You will remove, clean, replace, pack, and seal defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as traps, sections of broken tile pipe, sewer lines, and leaking drains.
  • You will install, maintain, and repair a variety of heating and air conditioning units to include: oil lines, air lines, water lines, steam lines, valves, pipes, flexible hose connections, or other related parts.
  • You will trace system malfunctions and replace fixtures such as safety devices, heating elements, valves, strainers, coils, and other related minor controls.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Pipefitter without more than normal supervision performing common tasks including:(1) Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as, steam-heating, hydraulic systems, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum systems, radiators and circulating pumps;(2) Working from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion and operation of various piping systems and equipment; and(3) Independently selecting tools and testing equipment to use for building, repairing, troubleshooting, or modernizing the following systems: steam and condensate distribution systems, hydrant and fire mains, water distribution systems, heating and control units, and plumbing systems.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to reach places. The work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may lift and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. May be required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The work may involve exposure to
the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.

NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.

May be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.

May be required to serve on-call duty on a rotational basis. When on-call, incumbent is required to carry a duty cell phone and duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.
