Summary

The Visual Information Specialist in the Office of Administration, Design and Communications Division performs work involved in the economical production of Executive Office of the President photographic and visual communications (printed material, presentations, exhibits, internet/web, etc.). The incumbent is responsible for planning, determining, designing, and visually communicating information received from staff members for publications, forms, and variety of EOP special interest products.

Duties

Help

As a Archivist (Digital), GS-1420-12, your typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Develops policy and procedures for archiving photographic artifacts and presidential records.
  • Develops full catalog records for digitized artifacts in the collections management system (Merlin), including associated media and metadata.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to special project leaders. Examines project objectives and employs various methods to provide the most effective means of photographic and visual communication (printed material, presentations, exhibits, internet/web, etc.).
  • Coordinates all aspects of projects including obtaining necessary graphics, photography and approvals.
  • Plans the design, layout, and executes all visual efforts in connection with the presentation of information, using visual techniques and procedures requiring original design development in a variety of EOP publications, reports, and other printed matter.
  • Prepares photographic jobs for printing and coordinates with Printing Specialists on project specifications.
  • Prepares design and typesetting specifications for camera ready mechanicals to be contracted through the Government Printing Office (GPO).
  • Provides training and guidance to colleagues for digital imaging of artifact collections, including artifact staging, digital image processing, and metadata management following National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Handles and stores digital files appropriately and reports issues and/or suggestions for file management.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the qualification requirements outlined below to be considered minimally qualified for this position. The qualification requirements are in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standards.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria listed below in order to meet the basic requirement for Archivist (Digital), 1420.

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Examples of qualifying experience includes:

  1. Experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and
  2. Experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
-AND-

You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following minimum qualification requirement:One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector that demonstrates: 1) Utilizing software to archive large amounts of data 2) Designing for web-based projects that involve photography and content creation and 3) Creating systems for the filing, archiving and retrieval of digital media and 4) Famaliarity with NARA.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service program (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
