Duties

Help
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and materials; and prepare purchasing documents for restocking.
  • Work with a variety of customers to correct compliance deficiencies.
  • Conduct facility and tank inspections for compliance with regulations for hazardous waste and material handling and storage.
  • Analyze, characterize, containerize, label, and process hazardous waste and material for disposal.
  • Respond, assist, and provide guidance for cleanup of hazardous waste and materials spills (typically petroleum, oil, and lubricants).
  • Compile data for Environmental reporting requirements in the areas of Air Quality, Hazardous Waste, Emergency Community Right to Know Act, Toxic Release Inventory, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls.
  • Perform landfill inspections to ensure the cap of closed landfill is maintained in a working condition.
  • Collect, process, ship, and analyze results for unknown waste streams.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must have completed or be able to successfully complete the 40 hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) course per 29 CFR 1910.120.
  • Pre-employment physical and annual physical are required as stated in 29 CFR 1910.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain and maintain, a valid state driver’s license, and required government driver’s license.
  • Some overnight travel may be required, normally not to exceed one week in duration.
  • Some weekend work and work outside the normal operating hours may occasionally be required to respond to spills.
  • May be required to carry a cell phone or pager in order to respond to spills.
  • Protective clothing and equipment may be needed; including respirators, gloves, safety shoes, etc.
  • Must have successfully completed or be able to successfully complete one of the following courses: Hazardous Waste Management and Manifesting or Transportation of Hazardous Material (HM)/(HW) for DoD.
  • Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds (or more with assistance) in order to move containers, etc., and perform other duties of the position.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes completing tasks to assist in environmental programs such as air or water quality, aboveground or underground tanks, toxic substances, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, pollution prevention, or environmental impact analysis. Performing tasks such as reviewing documents or reports, assisting with spill response, conducting inspections as directed, collecting, or compiling data, segregating, or packaging wastes. Accounting for equipment and safely operating equipment, conducting market research on supplies or equipment, following regulatory laws and procedures, or reviewing projects for environmental impacts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as environmental science, or related field such as microbiology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, or engineering. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
