Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Park Ranger completing routine day-to-day duties required to operate and maintain the facility. The Lake Washington Ship Canal and Hiram M. Chittenden Locks of the Corps of Engineers connects the waters of Lake Washington, Lake Union, and Salmon Bay to the tidal waters of the Puget Sound. In addition to being the site of a world class botanical garden, the Locks also serves as a major fish passage facility for many migrating species of salmon.

Duties

Help
  • Oversee interpretive activities, explain physical features of project.
  • Perform recreation area duties such as visitation and utilization data collection, explaining regulations, and answering routine questions.
  • Develop material for presentations of interpretive programs.
  • Patrol recreation areas for security.
  • Assist in directing the work of volunteers, contract labor crew, and other local groups.
  • Utilize automated systems to enter, retrieve, compile and transmit data.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • May require a US Army Corps of Engineers Boat Operators license.
  • Completion of Park Ranger training requirements, to include Visitor Assistance Training, CPR certificate, AED and first aid training within 6 months of appointment AND possession or the ability to acquire Title 36 Citation Authority within one year.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends and/or holidays depending on the needs of the project.
  • Pre-employment physical is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing park-related duties in park operations, such as campground reservations, fee collection; park maintenance, such as, fire ring maintenance, campground cleaning; or park rules enforcement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
