Job Summary:

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

The incumbent serves as a Media Logistics Assistant in the House Press Gallery and works as a non-partisan employee of the House, providing access and information about Congress to credentialed members of the daily press corps. This employee is responsible for delivering a variety of administrative services designed to facilitate media coverage of the House by the daily print and online media. Work is performed under the supervision and direction of the gallery Director.  

This position does not have day-to-day supervisory/managerial responsibilities.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

·       Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of legislative activity on the House floor, including scheduling information, parliamentary procedures

·       Identifies and disseminates legislative information to members of the media using distribution lists

·       Proficiency in the use of Twitter to LIVE-tweet House floor proceedings. Must be able to synthesize, describe and explain House floor actions using fact-based language and without commentary  

·       Maintains the gallery’s website with information that is accurate, relevant and reflects the current news environment

·       Monitors and tracks hearing coverage and provide on-site support when needed

·       Establishes and maintains contacts with committee staffs regarding legislative schedule and activity 

·       Assists with logistics for a variety of special events such as congressional gold medal ceremonies, Joint Meetings, Joint Sessions, and the Presidential Inauguration

·       Assists Director with planning and implementing logistics for the national political conventions

·       Creates and manages extensive legislative, historical and statistical files

·       Develops and fosters relationships with credentialed members of the media

·       Attends key news events and briefings and, where needed, use social media to disseminate important information

·       Assists colleagues with special projects as needed

·       Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements:

·       Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public policy or a related field, or equivalent experience. Capitol Hill news media experience preferred.

·       Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion

·       Proficient knowledge and understanding of legislative process

·       Proficient knowledge of House operations

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·       Ability to handle competing interests, personalities and job duties simultaneously with a high degree of professionalism and accuracy

·       Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as required

·       Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, social media, Google Docs, and Photoshop

·       Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
