Summary

This temporary, excepted service position is limited to law students in their first year of law school, located in the Bureau of Competition (BC), at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

The legal internship program gives law students the opportunity to work closely with attorneys, economists and other investigative staff on law enforcement investigations and federal court litigations. Interns learn the fundamentals of antitrust law through substantive assignments on a wide range of issues.

Duties

Serves in the capacity of a Student Trainee (Honors Legal Intern). Performs duties under the supervision of attorneys who give instructions as to the objectives and results to be obtained and are available for guidance, regarding which methods and procedures are to be followed, during progress of assignments to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.

The incumbent assist attorneys working on antitrust law practices, including merger and anticompetitive conduct cases or legal issues, and may be assigned to one of the following divisions

  • Anticompetitive Practices I (ACPI)
  • Anticompetitive Practices II (ACPII)
  • Heath Care (HC)
  • Technology Enforcement Division (TED)
  • Mergers I (M1)
  • Mergers II (M2)
  • Mergers III (M3)
  • Mergers IV (M4)

The incumbent performs a variety of legal duties such as:
  • participating in investigations to obtain facts and gather information, researching legal issues, taking notes during interviews, and writing interview reports.
  • searching document productions for specific issues, collecting such documents and evidence, and reporting their findings to the team.
  • assisting attorneys in conducting interviews with investigative sources and prospective witnesses to gather information useful in assessing the impact of regulations on industries; investigating corporate counsel contact information to set up industry interviews.
  • assisting in the development of drafts of letters, memoranda, and legal documents including complaints, subpoenas, and orders for use by attorneys.
  • participating in administrative or judicial hearings and pretrial conferences.
  • organizing, maintaining, and/or archiving files for case team members throughout the course of an investigation or litigation.
  • working collaboratively in a team environment; coordinating various support services as required by attorneys assigned to a case (i.e., requesting court reporters, shipping materials, coordinating with litigation support, paralegals, etc.)

Qualifications

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

To qualify for the Student Trainee (Legal Intern) position at the GS-07:
- Students must demonstrate possession of a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
- Students must have completed one year of law schoolby the beginning of summer session 2024.
- Students must be continuing in legal studies throughout the summer and/or into the Fall of 2024 to be eligible.
- Students graduating in the Spring of 2024 are not eligible.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You must submit a copy of your transcripts . Unofficial transcripts will be accepted in the application package; however, official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
