Summary

Reclamation is seeking a career professional looking for an opportunity to capitalize on their skills as a PARK RANGER. This is an open continuous vacancy announcement.

As a seasonal park ranger, your duties will include:
  • Providing park visitor assistance services.
  • Patrolling public land and water areas to prevent and report unauthorized activities, and to ensure the protection of park visitors and resources.
  • Assisting with the development of interpretive program materials.
  • Assisting with the execution of recreation management program objectives at a lake project by issuing permits and monitoring permitted activities.
  • Assisting during emergencies and cooperating with other law enforcement agencies to protect park visitors and resources.
  • Assisting with crowd control and/or evacuation procedures.
  • Participating in a user fee program either as a fee collector, designated collection officer's representative, or compliance inspector.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

  • You must maintain a valid state-issued driver's license at all times as the position requires operation of government vehicles on government and public roads. Failure to maintain a valid driver's license will result in removal from the position.
  • You will be required to obtain a successful pre-employment physical examination by a licensed physician certifying your ability to perform the duties of this position.
  • Required to wear authorized Bureau of Reclamation uniform in the performance of duties.
  • May be required to assist with crowd control and/or evacuation procedures.
  • May be required to work under physical stress for extended periods of time such as during emergency operations or when performing field work in remote areas.
  • Work requires participation in emergency search and rescue operations. Park rangers must be able to swim and pass a basic water safety/rescue course. Duties require work on boats and in or near water on a regular basis. Must be able to self-rescue and participate in water rescue.
  • Work may require driving over long distances (up to 200 miles on some days) on winding and unpaved or 4-wheel drive terrain roads.
  • You must possess or obtain a certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and blood-borne pathogen prevention.
  • A large portion of duties are performed outdoors on land and near water areas. The work requires the operation of vehicles, cycling over hilly paved roads; arduous walking in steep, uneven terrain; carrying heavy objects for short distances; using a variety of ground tools such as shovels, picks, and rakes; exposure to biting insects (including ticks), skin irritating plants (including poison oak), dust, and adverse weather conditions (i.e., extreme temperatures ranging from below 20 degrees in winter to over 110 degrees in summer).
  • This position is designated as a non-Sensitive LOW RISK position and requires a fully completed and favorably adjudicated National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and/or general work experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume. (This position may be filled at the GS-04 or GS-05 level.)

To qualify for the GS-04: You must possess 6 months of general experience, and 6 months of specialized experience. General experience is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as work that provides a foundational familiarity with natural, historical, or cultural history; fish and wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of natural resource protection and use; parks and recreation management and operations; enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations in a park environment or conservation area; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; and/or interpersonal relations and customer service skills in dealing with the public on a regular basis. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or trades and crafts work is also qualifying if pertinent to the position to be filled. Experience of a routine nature is not qualifying (i.e., typing, filing, data entry, or other routine tasks).

Examples of specialized experience include: Answering park visitor inquiries; providing information on various park programs, and/or park rules, regulations, and activities; checking the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire hazards, sanitation and maintenance reasons; and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution.

OR

You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education having completed 2 years of post-high school education with 12 semester hours of course work related to the position to be filled. NOTE: If using education to meet the position qualification requirements, you must include a legible copy of your school transcript with your application.

To qualify for the GS-05: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service, which includes: Conducting patrols to check conditions at various park and recreation areas; Drafting reports, maps, and/or other related documents for higher level review; Explaining rules and regulations to park visitors or providing information on park activities and resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level in the Federal service (GS-04).

OR

You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education having completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. You may combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications. NOTE: If using education to meet the position qualification requirements, you must include a legible copy of your school transcript with your application.

Examples of qualifying experience include (but not limited to) the following: Experience working as a park guide or tour leader; assisting in geological or historical preservation project initiatives; assisting in the execution of wildland fire protection programs within the boundaries of a national, state, and/or local park or conservation area; ensuring administrative compliance in the conservation of natural resources and/or safety of park visitors. These examples are not all inclusive.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience. You must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not-qualified for the position.
