Serves as Exercise Physiologist and a Sports Science Subject Matter Expert for human performance optimization for the United States Air Force Academy Department of Athletics. Applies current best human performance optimization research, guidelines, testing, and training in direct support of cadet athletes. Conducts performance assessments including, but not limited to, upper and lower body anaerobic power, maximal oxygen consumption, resting metabolic rate testing, body composition, lactate threshold determination, running economy, hemoglobin mass, biomechanical, cognitive function, and sports-vision performance with NCAA Division I level athletes and other DoD beneficiaries. Translates data into meaningful results for coaches and athletes. Provides education, training, consultation, and physiological diagnostics for cadet-athletes and coaching staff. Conducts thorough individual and team assessments and provides evidenced-based services to optimize comprehensive cadet-athlete and team performance. Manages data analytics programs pertaining to laboratory research efforts and intercollegiate athletics. Leads human physical training programs involving analyzing individual data, prescribing exercise, conducting exercise, and evaluating programs to improve their quality. Evaluates new products and technological developments for use within all human performance optimization realms.
Manages the physiology-based programs of the Athletic Department's Human Performance Laboratory. Applies physiology, research methods, statistics, and metrics expertise when advising Directorate leadership on the development, assessment, and execution of institutional and occupational competencies. Manages applied research and analysis projects supporting the Athletic Department areas of interest. Develops research and analysis, designs plans and requests for resources to support projects focused on human performance optimization. Provides technical advice, consultation, and mentorship to USAFA and interagency human performance programs. Advises leadership on programs for athletic development to meet current and future needs. Utilizes information gathered by direct observations, client interactions, and training, as well as interviews with teams, to select or develop evidence-based initiatives to mitigate identified hazards and barriers to optimal health and to enhance athletic performance. Collaborates closely with sports dietitians, sport psychologists, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches in selecting, developing, executing, and evaluating risk-mitigation and performance-enhancement strategies.
Instructs cadets in undergraduate Physical Education courses. Leverages scientific background and expertise to incorporate human performance optimization principles and content into educational curriculum. Coordinates and teaches sections of the Directorate of Athletics physical education curriculum with focus on topics and disciplines requiring Human Performance Optimization and Exercise Physiology expertise. Prepares course materials according to published course descriptions and delivers well-organized instruction to facilitate student learning. Counsels and evaluates assigned students as appropriate. Effectively provides student assessment and motivation. Oversees and coordinates student internship programs, ensuring all didactic, research and practical training requirements are met in accordance with educational agreements and program objectives.
Serves as the recognized physiology expert for the Athletic Department. Recognizes professional and administrative implications involved in policy changes and makes recommendations to reduce risk and optimize performance for cadet-athletes. Continuously collects and analyzes data to improve assessment methodologies. Develops or contributes to scientific modeling for evidence-based data collection and improvement strategies for cadet athletes. Prepares written evaluation reports with scientific impressions and recommendations. Accepts responsibility as a role model and mentor to cadet-athletes. Promotes an environment in which cadet athletes, staff, and coaches feel empowered to participate in and contribute to effective mission accomplishment. Acts as a liaison between USAFA and other DoD entities on programs or research initiatives focusing on Human Performance. Maintains informal and formal relationships and agreements with others in related professional disciplines to include military and civilian universities, to stay current with new developments and trends.
The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. The selectee's failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must hold at minimum, a Master's degree in exercise physiology; Doctoral degree preferred.
2. Must have at least 3 years post-graduate experience in Human Performance Optimization methodologies and exercise science applied within high performing athletic, military, or tactical populations.
3. Must be qualified and proficient in performing and interpreting physiologic testing.
4. Should demonstrate experience in sports science research, sports science data management, statistical analysis, and scientific writing.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior teaching, faculty, or athletic coaching experience is desired.
Candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.
Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment is desired.
