Summary

As a Pathways intern you will participate in a program which facilitates the college-to-career transition by providing opportunities in a variety of career tracks. As a Student Trainee (Legal), you will be provided with a wide variety of practical, real-world opportunities and experience working under the supervision of attorneys in the Office of Legal Services.

As a Student Trainee Legal Assistant, you will:

1. Perform research, writing, analysis, and other duties designed to provide exposure to, and experience in the application of legal and administrative principles and processes.
2. Obtain available information and documents necessary for resolution by the paralegal specialist and attorneys.
3. Proofread and cite check memoranda and other legal documents.
4. Maintain and organize legal documents, including, but not limited to inter-agency agreements, using web-based applications.
5. Review, summarize and monitor proposed federal and District of Columbia legislation.
6. Develop and/or provide training.
7. Perform a variety of technical and administrative duties in support of the office.

3. Must be 18 years or older
4. Suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
5. All applicants are subject to a comprehensive criminal background investigation, and required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment
6. Maintain status as a student for the duration of the internship
7. Maintain good academic standing, at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale.
8. All students have to sign a Pathway's Internship Program agreement and adhere to program requirements
9. Students must provide course registration and transcript and/or report card at the start of each school term, if extended
10. All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit to a financial institution of their choice
11. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.

This appointment is Not-To-Exceed (NTE) 1 Year but may be extended if student continues to meet the requirements of the program and workload is available.

This is not a law enforcement position.

The selectee will be required to report to the office at least 2 days a week.

Telework: PSA supports the use of telework to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for telework based on supervisory approval and in accordance with the Agency's telework policy.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the Pathway's Internship Programs, applicants must meet the following requirements below:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age; AND
  2. A student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate; AND
  3. In good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 or higher-grade point average (GPA) on a cumulative basis; AND
  4. In addition to the requirements above, to qualify for the GS-2 grade level, you must have at least three (3) months of general experience; or be a high school graduate or equivalent. General experience is defined as any type of work experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position. Examples of general work experience include: answering and referring telephones calls to the appropriate staff, maintaining and organizing documents, and using computer software.
