Duties

Help

On behalf of the Senate, facilitates and provides support for working, credentialed journalists. Acts as a media liaison between the Senate (and House, where applicable), Standing Committee of Correspondents, and press; Trains and directs SAA Daily Press Gallery staff in their daily duties, managing Senate Daily Press Gallery operations and services. Oversees Daily Press Gallery staff in tracking floor action, tallying votes, and coordinating coverage of Senate news conferences and hearings. Oversees areas where press congregate during votes, state visits, secure briefings, and high visibility events, guiding the press when exercising their rights to ensure Senators and Senate staff can conduct their business and move freely around the Capitol. Works in concert with Congressional offices and the media to arrange interviews, press conferences, meetings and related media opportunities. Works with other press galleries to facilitate and coordinate coverage of congressional events. Advises Senate Daily Press Gallery members on Senate (and House, where applicable) operations such as scheduling, procedure, floor strategy, committee structure and jurisdiction, key legislative initiatives and public policy; and monitors, tracks, and analyzes congressional activities. Advises the Standing Committee of Correspondents in the area of accreditation and credentialing, Senate Daily Press Gallery operations, and other related areas. Vets press to make certain that they or their employers do not engage in any lobbying, promotion, advertising, or publicity activity intended to influence legislation or any activity before Congress and ensures compliance with gallery membership rules. Plans, organizes, coordinates and implements media arrangements for quadrennial political conventions and presidential Inaugurals, State of the Union addresses, Supreme Court Justice Confirmation hearings and other major Congressional hearings, joint sessions, Impeachment trials, and special events.

Qualifications

Required Work Experience

  • Eight to ten years of news media experience working with legislative bodies, preferably concerning the U.S. Congress.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • Knowledge of current political events and Senate and parliamentary procedure.

Working Conditions

  • May sometimes be required to work long hours.
  • Extended periods of standing may be required.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, or communications, or other relevant experience.
