The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an Archives Specialist, you will:

  • Serve as the designated point of contact and technical expert for Federal agency records programs.
  • Maintain state-of-the art awareness of records management developments, methods, and techniques, answering general inquiries from agencies on matters of records management.
  • Review agency records schedules, appraises records, and process records schedules for approval by the Archivist of the United States.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Obtain and use a Government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
  • Administrative work is involved as well as general oversight of activities in various NARA office and agency locations. The work does not involve physical exertion.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Assisting with reviewing, appraising, and/or processing of federal agency records schedules; AND
  • Providing guidance and assistance to Federal agencies on records creation, management, and/or disposition; AND
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.

OR

EDUCATION:
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

OR

COMBINATION:
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and in writing; AND
  • Maintaining, transferring, preparing and/or locating a variety of federal records, finding aids and/or record descriptions.

OR

EDUCATION:
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

OR

COMBINATION:
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05level for 52 weeks.
