Summary

The Courtroom Clerk is responsible for capturing and maintaining a verbatim record of court proceedings and for entering case information during and after the proceedings. The Courtroom Clerk also supports the operations of the courts.

This announcement will create a roster for all Superior Court Courtroom Clerk positions.

Duties

Description of Major Duties:

  • Assembles all cases to be heard by the court prior to the judge taking the bench. 
  • Records judicial proceedings and decisions on official court documents. 
  • Administers oaths to witnesses and impanels juries. 
  • Prepares judicial summonses, bench warrants, arrest warrants and other legal documents as directed by a judge. 
  • Identifies and accounts for exhibits. Advises defendants of rights and penalties for violation of conditions of release. 
  • Manages the operations of the courtroom of the DC Superior Court, and performs administrative support as assigned.

  • A probationary period of one (1) year must be successfully completed.
  • Background and security investigation are required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR GRADE 7: High School Diploma or GED plus three (3) years of administrative or clerical experience in a court, legal or office environment; or an Associate's degree plus (1) years of administrative or clerical experience in a court, legal or office environment

Some familiarity with the criminal judicial system, judicial branch or legal terminology is preferred.


Must possess the ability to: multi-task, work well with a diverse group of people, accurately type in real time while monitoring a proceeding, attention to detail, attentiveness, organized, and able to work under pressure.

This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive Federal civil service.

Please note there is a mandatory one year probationary period for all non-judicial new employees.
