Summary

  • Duties listed below are at the full performance level.
  • Responsible for completing all work and targets associated with management of special status plants and fungi, invasive plant inventory and treatment, and acquiring native plant materials and writing revegetation plans for projects.
  • Serve as a botany, invasive plant, and native plant materials subject matter expert in the context of multiple-use federal land management by maintaining a working botanical knowledge to educate the public, peers, and subordinates.
  • Establish and communicate guidelines and performance requirements to employees; conducts formal performance reviews; and identifies developmental and training needs of employees.
  • Maintain partnerships and existing agreements, and works to establish new partnerships and agreements to accomplish priority work.
  • Serve as key interdisciplinary team member on large-scale landscape restoration projects.
  • Performs supervisory duties 20% or less of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirement: 0430 Series

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.

OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

For positions dealing with the study of fungi, or with basic mycological relationships, the course work in botany must have included at least 6 semester hours in mycology. Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying. The courses required for mycologists are specific and must have been in mycology.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting TWO (2) or more of the following:

  • As an advanced trainee, participated in the evaluation and monitoring of the threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs;
  • Located, surveyed, identified and recorded threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements;
  • Collected and summarized data and administered plant species projects; and/or
  • Assisted in the control of noxious weeds or other invasive species;
OR
A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, in a related field;

OR
A combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education was obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

For the GS-11: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting ALL of the following:
  • Developed, evaluated, and monitored threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs;
  • Conducted and oversaw vegetation inventories, population, and community monitoring;
  • Assisted in the development and implementation of management plans for the protection and enhancement of habitat for special status plants, and the identification and control of noxious weeds or other invasive species;
OR
3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with coursework directly related to the work of this position;

OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D. and coursework directly related to the work of this position).
