Help

As a Microbiologist within the Columbia Environmental Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Developing, leading, and successfully conducting research on microbial/algal ecology and functional genomics.
  • Independently leading research teams that may include multidisciplinary scientists from multiple agencies.
  • Managing, statistically analyzing, visualizing, and interpreting bioinformatic datasets associated with genomic and transcriptomic data from laboratory or field microbiology/algal studies.
  • Preparing proposals, reports to funding agencies, and scientific journal publications

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Microbiologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hour in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent

B. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. A. Along with the above education requirement, you must possess at least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Examples of specialized experience will include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations to understand microbial composition, diversity, and function in soil or aquatic habitats, animal microbiomes, or nutrient cycling; 2) modifying and adapting standard microbiological techniques, processes, and procedures, including producing and analyzing genomic and transcriptomic datasets and related bioinformatics and working in both field and laboratory settings; 3) serving as a technical resource on microbiology issues; and 4) publishing descriptive and quantitative scientific reports on the results of research activities, and attending scientific meetings to present and exchange information within the scientific community. For examples 1-4, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.

B. A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study.

A combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.

Knowledge of the scientific methods necessary to develop and carry out research study plans and proposals in the areas of microbial ecology, community structure, and/or ecosystem services (e.g., nitrogen cycling in aquatic systems), including a wide variety of field and lab-oriented research techniques and methodologies; must possess skill in initiating studies, exercising independent judgment, and making decisions concerning changes in plans, designs, and procedures.

2. Knowledge and experience with application of -omics and other molecular approaches to identify and functionally characterize microorganisms, microbial communities, microbial ecosystem services, and/or microbial interactions with animal physiology or environmental contaminants.

3. Ability to lead research teams and work with other scientists to conduct and publish interdisciplinary research projects on microbial ecology or nutrient cycling; research projects include both laboratory and field components.

4. Ability to statistically analyze and interpret bioinformatic datasets associated with genomic and transcriptomic data from laboratory or field microbiology studies.

5. Ability to effectively communicate research findings both in written and oral form, including presentation of results and conclusions, and writing of scientific publications.
