Help

The Senior Counsel to the Inspector General (IG) uses a demonstrated understanding of or familiarity with the workings of the DOJ to serve as a senior legal and policy advisor to the IG and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) on a variety of issues. In this capacity, the Senior Counsel to the IG:

  • Provides legal and policy recommendations based upon research, analysis, and the evaluation of expert information to advise the IG on matters affecting the mission of the OIG and the efficiency of the DOJ.
  • Oversees, reviews, and edits OIG reports and correspondence, including reports of OIG audits, inspections, investigations, and special reviews; semiannual reports, including the USA PATRIOT Act Report; congressional reports; and other materials.
  • Leads the planning, organization, and coordination and provides organizational continuity for the work of the Top Management and Performance Challenges committee.
  • Serves as the IG's primary liaison with the OIG's Management and Planning Division on OIG budget matters, including responses to Department requests for proposed OIG budgets, meetings with OMB to support the OIG's budget requests, and interaction with staff of congressional appropriations committees about the OIG's budget requests.
  • Serves as liaison for or Senior Counsel assigned to overseeing issuance of the OIG's Semiannual Report to Congress; the open recommendations report; and other OIG corporate products, including development and updating of OIG-wide strategic planning efforts.
  • Serves as a representative for the OIG with high level officials within and outside the DOJ, other federal agencies, and the private sector.

Qualifications

To receive full consideration of your application package, applicants MUST meet the following qualification requirements: A J.D. from an accredited law school, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), and have at least 5 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.

Mandatory Technical Qualification(s) (MTQs): Applicants must submit a written narrative for each MTQ limited to one page per MTQ. Failure to meet or fully address each Mandatory Technical Qualification will eliminate a candidate from further consideration.

1. Demonstrated experience advising agency or organization leadership on broad, complex reviews, audits, evaluations, or investigations from an Office of the Inspector General, Internal Affairs, Professional Responsibility, or comparable office; substantial experience performing extremely complex legal analysis to draw well-supported conclusions; and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

2. Demonstrated outstanding writing, editing, and collaborative communication skills; the ability to represent the OIG professionally and communicate effectively and authoritatively with senior government and private sector officials.

Applicants will be evaluated on the quality and extent of total accomplishments, experience and demonstrated executive-level qualifications. An SL rating and ranking panel will review applications to determine the highly qualified candidates. An Executive Resources Board (ERB) will review results and make recommendations on final selections to the appointing authority where final interviews and reference checks may occur.
