These positions are located at Cordova and Moose Pass, Alaska, on the Chugach National Forest. Positions filled will be full-time; or full-time seasonal with either 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of nonpay time or 18 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 8 pay periods of nonpay time.

Duties

Help
  • Serves as a member, trails maintenance team, to maintain, repair, and build trails throughout the Forest Service unit to ensure protection of wildlife habitat and water quality in addition to improving recreational access to forest lands.
  • Builds trails with gravel and associated materials, restores impacted areas, and replaces signage as needed.
  • Prepares construction materials, ensures proper tool maintenance, and reports work completed.
  • Plans and implements the logistics of projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects.
  • Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications.
  • Oversees routine maintenance of trails at dispersed recreation sites including cleanup and naturalizing.
  • May interact with forest visitors and when assigned, educates visitors covering trail maintenance and cleanup.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following:

  • Inspected recreation areas and/or trails;
  • Provided information to users of recreational areas or trails of resource management practices, recreation use regulations, opportunities, and restrictions;
  • Performed routine support assignments in a forestry specialty area such as recreation or timber; OR
  • Performed crew-based forestry related support work such as recreation trail or recreation facility construction and/or maintenance projects.
OR

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or 4-years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position. or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable).

OR

You must have a combination of experience and education as described above that together meets the requirements for the position. (the education must be in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) or Reemployment Priority List (RPL): To exercise selection priority for this vacancy, CTAP/RPL candidates must meet the basic eligibility requirements and all selective factors. CTAP candidates must be rated and determined to be well qualified (or above) based on an evaluation of the competencies listed in the How You Will Be Evaluated section. When assessed through a score-based category rating method, CTAP applicants must receive a rating of at least 85 out of a possible 100.

Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) provides current or former temporary and term employees the opportunity to compete for permanent competitive service positions. Individuals must have more than 24 months of service without a break between appointments of two or more years and the last temporary or term appointment must have been with the Forest Service. Service must be in the competitive service and have been at a successful level of performance or better. Part-time and intermittent service will be credited only for time actually worked. Non-pay status such as leave without pay is credited for up to six months in a calendar year; anything beyond six months is not credited. Applicants are responsible for providing sufficient information/documentation to determine if the 24 month criteria is met.

This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
