Duties

Help
  • This position serves as an interdisciplinary Ecologist/Botanist within the Green River District.
  • Performs professional work in the botany/plant ecology/restoration ecology programs within the framework of BLM’s multiple use mission.
  • Provides support and assistance for projects and planning assignments involving native plant community management, native plant materials development, conservation and management of special status plant species and unique ecological systems.
  • Provides support and assistance in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of the botany/plant ecology/restoration ecology program.
  • Assists in providing botany/plant ecology information when serving on interdisciplinary resource management teams to support planning, NEPA, and other land management efforts.
  • Provides botanical/plant ecology technical data, professional advisory, and consulting services for conventional issues, problems, and activities.
  • Develops recommendations, strategies, and solutions to resolve common botanical/plant ecology resource and environmental issues, conditions, problems, or policies.
  • Participates on interdisciplinary teams to address routine issues within the organization botany/plant ecology/restoration ecology program.
  • Participates in the implementation of policies, procedures, goals, objectives, targets, and priorities for the organization’s botany/plant ecology/restoration ecology program.
  • Plans and conducts investigations or studies of common botanical/plant ecology related projects affecting the organization’s natural resource management.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of an Ecologist/Botanist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: assisting with conducting mapping and documenting botany species; monitoring and surveying native plant communities; preparing routine reports and making presentation related to plant ecology/botany; and assisting with investigations or studies of common plant ecology/botanical related projects.

OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.

OR Superior Academic Achievement: Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.

In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of an Ecologist/Botanist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: participating in the planning and execution of plant studies; performing established tests and analyses on a broad range of plant samples; conducting mapping and documenting botany species; preparing and/or reviewing reports and make presentations related to botany/plant ecology; and conducting investigations or studies of common plant ecology/botanical related projects.

OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work may also be performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing, or driving motor vehicles to worksites. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.

Work Environment: The work is usually performend in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent occasionally visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, divers terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction. Both settings may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the incumbent complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisors.

Education

The Ecologist position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have:

1. Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

The Botanist position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have:

1. Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Education: Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.
