Duties

Help

The Building Service Worker serves under the supervision of the Building Services supervisors, performing a variety of duties in zone to support overall facility management.

In this position, you will:

  • Performs various duties such as moving, arranging and lifting very large and unusually heavy material and collections.
  • Loads and unloads debris, trash, equipment, supplies and other materials from trucks, vans and cars by using dollies, hand trucks, hand operated hydraulic lifts, and/or by hand.
  • Assists with custodial tasks as required, custodial duties include cleaning offices, exhibit space, restrooms, corridors, storage rooms, stairways or any area within the confines of the building(s) using brooms, mops, buckets, heavy duty vacuums and buffers and scrubbers.
  • Dusts, scrubs, sweeps, waxes and polishes horizontal surfaces such as floors, cleans mirrors, empties trash and recycle bins, washes walls, windows, air vents, blinds, and fixtures.

Must be available to work any one of the various shifts and/or assigned workdays that include holidays, weekends, and call backs for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks involve moderately heavy physical effort to include lifting and moving possibly bulky weights over 50 pounds in the form of museum objects, building materials, trash and debris, and wheelbarrow loads. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs, stand and walk for long periods of time on hard and sometimes uneven surfaces. Must have good balance.
