The Museum Specialist (Geology) performs a broad range of tasks associated with use, management, outreach, and physical care of collections in the museum.

In this position you will:

  • Perform independent assignments and collections support to prepare and clean fossil collection items in the prep lab using specialized techniques. 
  • Perform collection conservation and archival housing duties.
  • Assist in providing direction and oversight of the general operations and maintenance of the fossil preparation lab.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and advice to junior staff, contractors, and volunteers on preparation and conservation of fossil specimens, and conservation housing projects in the lab and collections.

Qualifications

Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.  Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service that is similar to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. For this position, specialized experience is defined as performing paleontological preparation and conservation of fossil specimens; providing advice on these techniques to junior staff, volunteers, and the public in a public fossil preparation lab setting; following health and safety protocols; assisting in the imaging of fossil specimens, such as micro-CT scanning, and other large-scale collection imaging activities; and performing general operations and maintenance of a preparation laboratory.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of fossil preparation and replication techniques, including investigating new methods for preparation, molding and casting, and imaging of fossil specimens, to include microCT imaging for paleontological research.

  2. Knowledge of fossil conservation and archival housing techniques using accepted archival materials, including creating padded plaster storage jackets and investigating new methods for creating collection storage housings.
  3. Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of a fossil preparation lab, which includes applying safe work practices, potential task hazards and control measures necessary for the safe use of chemicals and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), in a preparation laboratory setting.
  4. Ability to assist, guide and advise junior staff, contractors, and volunteers on the preparation, conservation, and housing of fossil collections and conservation projects in vertebrate paleontology.
