Help
  • Provides technical expertise, staff coordination and consultation in the areas of data visualization and analytics, sensor programming and deployment, and data-management applications.
  • Provides programmatic and technical advice for the collection, compilation, storage, analysis, reporting, and distribution of strategic multi-resource data.
  • Curates research data collected by researchers and from sensor networks, which includes accurately transferring data and reconciling inconsistencies, creating metadata records to document changes, and storing backup versions of original data files.
  • Lead collaborative teams in the design, development, and maintenance (including normalization) of existing standalone and internet-enabled databases.
  • Archive and analyze biological and/or physical science data and metadata to address complex resource issues.
  • Operate complex computer systems and software packages and develop procedures to produce and maintain systems for archiving and distributing biological and physical data.
  • Develops and prepares presentations and briefings to program leadership, collaborators, and others on long-term trends in data and on availability of archived data.
  • Collaborates and advises on many research and monitoring projects to satisfy the requirements of data users and research scientists.
  • Analyzes work processes to determine the feasibility of upgrading data management protocols or implementing new ones.
  • Tests programs to ensure accurate and statistically consistent operation and identifies problems and bottlenecks in the information management system and makes corrections and improvements.

Basic Education Requirement:

GS-0401 Biological Science:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR
Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.

GS-1301 Physical Science:
Degree: a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR
Combination of education and experience that included education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-9: You must have one-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 in the Federal service. To qualify, your specialized experience must show at least four of the following six items.

  • Assisting with creating complex databases including full metadata and flagging of questionable data.
  • Manipulating and assisting in analyzing large data sets from a variety of research areas such as forestry, atmospheric sciences, hydrology, socio-economics, wildlife, fisheries - analyses included graphical and text summaries across multiple timesteps, calculations of higher order statistical metrics.
  • Assisting in developing, designing and managing complex databases including data dictionaries, data models, quality assurance, and metadata for multi-disciplinary information and geospatial applications.
  • Presenting analysis of complex and large datasets at local or regional scientific meetings, assisted with national meeting presentations.
  • Integrating datasets with different structural and disciplinary characteristics.
  • Documenting the multiple steps of data acquisition and management of streaming data, starting with raw data on field datalogger to final data available on the web, such as through workflow diagrams.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree directly related to the position or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B., or J.D. related to the position.

OR
Appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify at this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
