Duties

Help
  • Serves as the organization’s technical expert for the collection, analysis, and reporting of resource data for the qualitative and quantitative inventory and monitoring of vegetation, soil, and water resources and the associated wildlife habitat.
  • Reviews data acquisition procedures within the organization to ensure consistent inventory and monitoring methods are utilized which align with BLM protocols and databases.
  • Provides expert technical advice and direction for the collection, warehousing, analysis, and reporting of the organization’s terrestrial/aquatic inventory program.
  • Applies knowledge of ecological principles and applications in statistics to terrestrial and aquatic inventory, assessment and monitoring practices in order to assist with interpretation of the measures of upland and riparian vegetation.
  • Reviews, interprets, develops and oversees implementation of the monitoring framework to allow consistent application into NEPA documents and for resource allocation decisions.
  • Integrates and coordinates with other associated resource programs, such as soil/water/air, hydrology, range, wildlife, lands, minerals, fire, and vegetation management (e.g. fuels and invasive species).
  • Analyzes natural resource monitoring and assessment data at multiple scales, taking into account the underlying sampling design and associated statistical assumptions.
  • Coordinates the preparation of reporting and analyses documents to support decision-making.
  • Applies resourcefulness and imagination to determine the validity and soundness of projects originating at lower levels.
  • Serves as a consultant and advisor to other resource disciplines dealing with various techniques suitable for the acquisition and analysis of upland and riparian vegetative conditions.

GS-0401/0408-12: In addition to meeting the education requirements in order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the one year of specialized experience. Be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-11) of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include:

  1. using a variety of analytical tools, software, and monitoring data systems to perform terrestrial and aquatic resource analysis and data management;
  2. coordinating data collection, reporting, and documentation at a local or state/regional level;
  3. performing advanced analyses on natural resources datasets;
  4. performing complicated statistical analyses;
  5. contributing to natural resource planning documents; and, contributing to study reports and technical briefings for senior managers in the areas of assessment,
  6. inventory and/or monitoring of natural resources.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

0401 Monitoring Coordinator Education Requirements:

  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
or
  1. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

0408 Ecologist Education Requirements:
  1. Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
