Duties

Help
  • Provide biological, toxicological, and health information support to an organization in carrying out radiation risk assessments for specific environmental Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites.
  • Comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work that enhances the safety and security of the work environment.
  • Interpret and supplement health physics/radiation safety policy/standards and apply federally mandated standards and national consensus standards in establishing safety policy and programs.
  • Analyze accidents to identify causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct or direct surveys of radiation areas within customers organizations to include field measurements, wipe tests, and laboratory analysis.
  • Serve as a technical expert in applied health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District.
  • Interprets and applies NRC, EPA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), DA, and USACE regulations, standards and guidance pertaining to the possession, use, transport, transfer, and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Manages the Districts Radiation Control Program in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations, Dept. of Army regulations and USACE regulations, as the designated District RadiationSafety Officer.
  • Represents the district and customers in meetings with various-level federal, state, and local agencies regarding guidance concerning health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation assessment criteria applicable to USACE HTRW activities.
  • Work includes reviewing, developing, and recommending technical documents regarding health physics/ radiation protection safety/radiation risk assessment for Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) site investigation, design, and activities.
  • Provides technical health physicist support and over-site of district Low Level Waste Disposal.
  • Duties include, but are not limited to, the inspection of the facilities for compliance with applicable EPA, OSHA, NRC, and US Army regulations and standards, and providing health physicist support on all aspects of waste disposal.
  • Compiles, reviews, and interprets radiation data and testing results and/or assures that contractors perform such surveys in accordance with the current requirements.

  • This position may require up to a Top-Secret Security clearance to work on certain projects. Clearance is NOT required prior to being selected, but if selected, may be expected to be able to obtain said clearance.

  • The business travel requirement is 25%.

This position has a basic requirement for Health Physicist

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.

OR

C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized experience is defined as: Providing technical direction, review, support in the areas of chemical, biological, health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment; Monitoring, reviewing, developing, and recommending technical documents regarding health physics/radiation protection safety/radiation risk assessment for Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) sites; analyzing radiological control practices and modify or initiate new programs, techniques, or procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Education
