Duties

Help
  • Leads a team of scientists that studies, expands and complements an existing research program regarding 1) the composition of diets and meals and timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease and
  • 2) the interactions with and impact on metabolism by diet, dietary components (e.g. lipids, fiber), exercise, and timing of food consumption/exercise.
  • Conceives, leads, and implements both independent research and multidisciplinary, team-based research (basic, clinical and/or translational) and analyzes experimental data.
  • As Research Leader provides pre-submission review of reports (abstracts, original manuscripts, book reviews/chapters, and letters to the editor) produced by scientists assigned to the research management unit.
  • Provides oversight of one or more Center research cores.
  • Submits at least two manuscripts per year for publication of experimental results in peer-reviewed journals and presents information at scientific meetings and at other research institutions.
  • Prepares written work products based on research to be published in professional articles, publications, and technical abstracts.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Requirements
0630 Dietitian and Nutritionist:
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

0413 Physiology Series:
Degree
: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.
Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences.
Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.

1320 Chemistry Series:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet Specialized Experience requirements as stated below.

GS-14:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal. The specialized
experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are:

  • Planning and conducting independent human studies research or animal model research related to the composition of diets and meals or the timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease, or the influence of diet, dietary components (e.g. lipids, fiber), and timing of food consumption/exercise on metabolism.
  • Managing personnel, materials, equipment, resources, and facilities needed to accomplish research goals;
  • Presenting research results related to composition of diets and meals on health and metabolism to professional societies and others outside of the organization.
  • Publishing independent research results related to composition of diets and meals on health and metabolism in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
GS-15:
In addition to the GS-14 grade level requirements stated above, applicants must possess one year of specialized equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 level of this position are:
  • Leading a team conducting collaborative human studies research or animal model research related to the composition of diets and meals or the timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease, or the influence of diet, dietary components (e.g. lipids, fiber), and timing of food consumption/exercise on metabolism.
  • Managing personnel, materials, equipment, resources, and facilities needed to accomplish research goals.
  • Publishing independent research results related to composition of diets and meals on health and metabolism in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Supervisory/Managerial Competencies - the following KSAs will also be used to evaluate candidates in the interview and selection process:1. Ability to lead and accomplish work through others (i.e. team building, conflict management, cultural awareness, strategic thinking, technology management, and political savvy.)2. Ability to communicate with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds in a variety of situations.
