Duties

This position manages all data that flows through the CAAS systems portfolio – most prominently (but not solely) ArchivesSpace.

In this position, you will:

  • Serve as a Systems Analyst and assists in Data Management and maintenance with a focus on Archives and Libraries collection management
  • Serve as an Archival Systems and Data Analyst. In this capacity, the incumbent performs IT systems analysis and database management functions to support archival description metadata, workflows, metadata reuse, and retrieval of archival collection materials across Smithsonian units.
  • Perform analysis on data mapping from multiple data sources, programs and implements data transformation for multiple data types including XML and JSON-LD, review data quality, and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Provide project support in accordance with appropriate project management (PM) and system development life cycle management (LCM) principles; technical support in the selection, procurement, design, implementation, system administration, maintenance, and/or enhancement of advanced technology application systems, and projects.

Qualifications

GS-12 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience in library and information science, as well as performing ArchivesSpace, EAD, EAC, and/or RiC (Records in Contexts) implementation for a library or archival organization; digital asset systems (e.g., OpenText Media Management) and information management systems (e.g., ArchivesSpace) to conduct data analyses and implement bulk data transformations.

In addition to meeting the Specialized Experience for all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

    • Attention to Detail:  Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
    • Customer Service: Anticipates and meets the needs of both internal and external business partners and customers (any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unity produces including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government).  Provides information or assistance. Delivers high-quality products and services; is committed to continuous improvement.  Effectively manages customer relationships.
    • Oral Communication:  Makes clear and convincing oral presentations to individuals and groups. Listens effectively; clarifies information, as needed.  Speaks and writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner that is appropriate to the audience.  Facilitates an open exchange of ideas to ensure all group input is considered.  Handles technical, sensitive, or controversial topics with agility involving executives/managers as appropriate.
    • Problem Solving: Identifies and analyzes problems, weighs relevance and accuracy of information, generates, and evaluates alternative solutions, and makes sound recommendations.

  • Ability to lead ArchivesSpace, EAD, EAC, and/or RiC (Records in Contexts) implementation for a library or archival organization
  • Knowledge of XSLT, XQuery and data transformation techniques for multiple data types including but not limited to XML and JSON-LD.
  • Ability to manage complex projects in a consortium-like environment and provide leadership and guidance to promote the implementation of metadata standards.
