The Conservator (Objects) designs, proposes and conducts conservation treatments on a wide variety of inorganic and organic collections objects.
In this position, you will:
Identify the objects current condition and the nature and extent of treatment needed for their preservation, conservation, or restoration. Prepare a written treatment proposal for the object which explains treatment objectives, methods and materials.
Support operations of the conservation laboratory, development of unit-wide guidelines and protocol for the handling, care and storage of collections items, and for their presentation and exhibition. Prepare written condition surveys, technical examination reports and treatment proposals, with sketches, photographs, analytical reports, digital images and radiographs.
Advise curators, technicians, exhibit design and production staff, and others, on the conservation needs of the collections being prepared for exhibition, loan, or storage. Work independently and with others in planning and scheduling the conservation work for exhibits, loans and other projects to track the conservation work against the overarching project plans.
Perform conservation treatment performing highly complex and delicate techniques on extremely valuable objects from the collection. Objects worked upon are often extremely valuable and always irreplaceable, thus require unremitting attention to detail.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.
In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:
You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience conducting object-level conservation surveys to determine condition and treatment needs; performing conservation treatment on three-dimensional historic objects and art in a museum or cultural institution to include coordinating and organizing conservation work related to multiple concurrent projects; creating unit-wide guidelines and object-level conservation treatment proposals and reports and advising staff on the handling and care of the collection in storage, on exhibit and in transit.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
