Duties

Help
  • As Chief, Environmental Health section, plans, directs, reviews and coordinates the work for subordinate engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • As the District's technical expert in the broad range of industrial hygiene issues ensures parameters are identified for hazardous, toxic, and radiological wastes.
  • Provides guidance and oversees the preparation of Health and Safety Guidelines and requirements for field sampling and investigations at Buffalo District River and Harbor projects, civil works project sites, and HTRW sites.
  • Conducts short-term and long-term human health risk assessments for HTRW projects and District construction and operation and maintenance projects.
  • Develops and implements consistent Quality Assurance Procedures associated with HTRW activities, including Chemistry, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, and Health Physics functions.
  • Reviews completed work and recommendations of assigned staff and A/E contractors for technical accuracy, adherence to Federal, State, and local environmental standards and guidelines and agency policy and provide instructions on required changes.
  • Serves as the Chief of the Environmental Health section who plans, supervises, and coordinates the work of a subordinate staff in all matters relating to required environmental documentation.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education/experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Basic Requirement for Supervisory Ecology:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
Basic Requirement for Supervisory Toxicology:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Health Physicist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.
OR C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A
.Basic Requirement for Supervisory Chemistry:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in evaluation, sampling, analysis, and interpretation of environmental data; coordinating teams of subject matter experts and environmental professionals in the execution of complex environmental projects and experience with laws and regulations governing federal agencies engaged in hazardous, toxic and radioactive waste programs and projects.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12 or above]).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
