Duties

Help

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As a Space Management Officer, you will:

  • Provide expert assistance on major planning problems and help formulate efficient, economical solutions including design, alteration, and construction projects within prescribed cost limits and space conservation projects, which involve significant changes in space layouts.
  • Develop and design floor plans, layouts, work flow charts, etc. to coordinate work operations and space assignments. Develop plans to alter available space to suit agency needs as well as plans to adjust agency operations to fit the space plans. Integrate necessary safety and security measures and make certain that adequate building systems are available. Review space allowance criteria, personnel strengths and levels, organizational structure, office equipment, and special facilities.
  • Conduct periodic surveys of all OIG space assignments and reviews survey reports to determine space utilization and recommend allocation of space suitable for given agency component's needs. Recommend the release of space not being fully used and the acquisition of new space adaptable to OIG needs.
  • Plan and coordinate significant actions for OIG, which commonly involve a series of moves by employees between several buildings and the occupancy of a new space.
  • Determine requirements, prepare and submit budget estimates, and administer the funds appropriated annually for construction and moving. Coordinate requests for building alterations and determine the priority for submission to GSA. Review all requests for alteration, moving, or repairs directly or through other office staff to ensure that adequate funds are available and to plan for supplemental requests or changes in work priorities based on expected future expenditures.
  • Represent OIG in negotiations and interface with GSA, building personnel, and other agencies regarding policies, services, and approached toward project accomplishment.

Specialized experience for the GS-13 is defined as one year of experience at the GS-12 level, or equivalent, that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience is defined as:
- Applying analytical techniques for assessing the effectiveness or efficiency of space management operations or work processes; AND
- Consolidating information from multiple sources into a completed written document and architectural drawing; AND
- Utilizing communication skills to establish relationships with internal and external stakeholders; AND
- Presenting and implementing recommendations to high level management in order to resolve an issue and/or overcome a challenge.


Specialized experience for the GS-12 is defined as one year of experience at the GS-11 level, or equivalent, that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience is defined as:
- Applying analytical techniques for assessing the effectiveness or efficiency of space management operations or work processes; AND
- Consolidating information from multiple sources into a completed written document and architectural drawing; AND
- Utilizing communication skills to establish relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
