Help

As a Public Affairs Specialist within the Office of Communication and Publishing, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Manages communication projects or supports a programmatic approach to managing communications by tracking planned products, ensuring proper reviews and protocol, and maintaining consistent messaging and branding as needed across products.
  • Communicate information that involves high visibility issues and may require careful coordination or fast-paced responses to tight deadlines, exercising appropriate professional judgement in handling of sensitive and controversial situations.
  • Plans and coordinates the release of newsworthy public information. Maintains relationships with reporters, government officials, stakeholders, and other target audiences. Develops outreach events to help meet communication goals.
  • Develops products, campaigns, and posts to reach audiences with a combination of written and visual products for web or social media. Develops a variety of multimedia and interactive products that incorporate photos and videos.
  • Independently researches, writes, and prepares content for public dissemination such as new releases, feature stories, talking points, speeches, briefing materials, videos, photographs and social media posts that highlight USGS science and activities.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Qualifications

For GS-13:

Applicants must have one year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service that is in or related to public affairs and that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of such experience could include: (1) providing communication advice and recommendations to a program manager and/or providing editorial oversight on communication projects, ensuring compliance with review protocols, consistent messaging, and appropriate branding (2) preparing materials such as brochures, speeches/talking points, news releases, news and feature articles, video scripts, public service announcements, or other content for intranet/internet/social media accounts in support of a public affairs or outreach program; (3) developing key messages or communication products in response to current public interests or concerns; (4) serving as a point of contact for media inquiries, pitching media opportunities, and planning high profile public or media events to raise awareness about a program; (5) advising subject matter experts on how to translate scientific or technical concepts and identifying communication approaches and products that are most likely to resonate with lay audiences; (6) monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of public affairs tactics and strategies.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
