Do you get excited at the prospect of inspecting, describing, and rehousing film reels of every conceivable gauge and stock? Would you enjoy working with videotape, DVDs, Blu-rays, video games, and even the occasional laserdisc? How about doing all this in a facility custom built for the storage and preservation of audiovisual material, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, alongside colleagues who share your passion and enthusiasm? We have the job for you.

This position is located in the Moving Image Section of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia. The Archives Technician works under the administrative supervision of the Collections Manager (Supervisory Archivist) in coordination with the Moving Image Section Head. The Archives Technician assists in or independently accomplishes the completion of special projects identified by the leadership of the Moving Image Section. He or she implements standards for accuracy and detail while exercising judgment, technical proficiency, and an understanding of the archival principles of arranging, describing, preserving, and securing rare and fragile moving image material. The Technician works with a wide range of archival moving image material, from the newest video formats to the oldest original camera film negatives and everything that came between.

Performs a broad range of archival work for a major moving image collection in need of sorting and arrangement. Participates in preliminary review and handling of assigned collections. Removes duplicate and extraneous material as directed. Arranges, sorts, and shelves new materials and shelves new materials returned to the vaults. Effects shifts necessitated by growth of the collection.

Performs complex and difficult work in identifying and describing moving image physical formats in designated content categories. Organizes and compiles information for accession and bibliographic records. Helps identify collection material and applies descriptive information according to a prescribed plan. Assists in the compilation of inventories, finding aids and other descriptive compilations in automated format.

Serves as a point of contact for most technical aspects involved in the preservation and maintenance of moving image collections. Assists in preliminary review of moving image collections to determine physical condition. Following a prescribed plan, identifies and labels material for conservation and inventory control, including in automated systems. Treats and houses material according to instructions and performs duties such as shelving and relocating collections, and transferring items, containers, and files.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of moving image documentation, processes and procedures.**

Ability to maintain materials in a moving image collection.**

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion.

Ability to utilize integrated library systems and other technologies.

Knowledge of moving image history and formats.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
