Duties

Help

  • Instructs doctoral and Master of Science Students and continuing education students in the broad disciplines of operations research, and data science, as well as in the application of the current state of the knowledge in these disciplines to the operational problems of the Air Force. Courses range from introductory operations research courses, such as linear programming, probability modeling, simulation, and engineering economy, to advanced electives in areas of specialization that supports the Department's needs and mission.
  • Teaches students in graduate courses, including the associated duties of enforcing classroom standards, preparing course materials according to published course descriptions, and providing extra instruction outside of normal class hours for students who require it. Teaching includes all activities by a faculty member within the formal academic degree programs of the Institute.
  • The diversity of teaching activities includes classroom lectures, laboratory and project course supervision and teaching, program and course development, development of pedagogical materials, supervision of doctoral and master's students, and related activities outside the classroom.
  • Provides well-organized instruction to facilitate, assess, and continuously improve student learning. Counsels and evaluates assigned students, providing student assessment and motivation.
  • Directs, coordinates, and evaluates the research activity of doctoral and Master of Science Students, and serves as a reader on student research committees. Develops research topics suitable for thesis and dissertation research, covering a broad spectrum of Air Force related problems and, where appropriate, with the active sponsorship of Air Force or other relevant organizations.
  • Initiates and conducts a program of research in the field of specialization, which contributes to the body of knowledge. Pursues professional development through membership in professional societies and participation in conferences or other appropriate activities to maintain professional and academic currency in area of specialization.
  • Research activity is expected to result in peer-reviewed journal publications, invited or reviewed conference presentations and proceedings, research grants, review papers, monographs, and seminar and colloquium presentations. Faculty members are expected, over their careers, to establish and sustain sponsored research, to include funding sufficient to support their scholarly activities.
  • Graduate faculty members provide advice and counsel to improve the quality of educational programs. Faculty members serve internally through various departmental, School and Institute committees.
  • Faculty serve their respective disciplines by refereeing journal articles, conference papers and grant proposals, organizing professional conferences or sessions, as members of editorial boards, as officers of professional societies, and as members of national and/or international review boards and committees.
  • Provides consultation services to the Air Force and other appropriate organizations in the area of specialization.
  • Mentors and manages the educational progress of MS and PhD students. Provides annual written feedback on MS and PhD students as prescribed by Air Force and AFIT Operating Instructions.

  • Essential qualities expected of every Assistant Professor of Operating Research include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.
  • Travel by military or commercial transportation to gather ideas for improving the curriculum, establish research contacts and agreements, conduct research, and present results of research may be required.
  • Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 3 years.
  • At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
  • An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
  • The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
  • All federal employees are required to have direct deposit.

  • Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position.
  • This civilian faculty duty period is normally 12 months, however a shorter duty period with a corresponding pro-rated salary (e.g., 10/12 of an annual salary for a 10-month duty period) may be required.
  • Duties required periods of standing (typically not to exceed two hours in duration) walking, bending, and/or carrying of objects of less than 20 pounds.

Qualifications
  • An earned Doctorate degree in operations research, or related field such as industrial engineering, data science, management science or a mathematically rigorous engineering program is required before employment begins.
  • Possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with the DoD e.g. its organization, policies, operations, etc.
  • Experience in university research, teaching, and professional service.
  • Specialization in applied statistics, deterministic operations research, simulation modeling and analysis, data analytics, data science, and stochastic modeling is desired.
  • Familiarity with emerging education technologies.
  • Experience in obtaining external research funding, publishing research results, administrative experience managing multiple projects and budgets involving personnel at various levels is strongly desired.
  • Experience in building partnerships with other academic institutions, both civilian academic institutions and government academic institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with other senior academic and administrative leaders, faculty groups, individual faculty, support staff, education/research sponsors, et al.
  • Experience in assessing academic programs and recommending strategies and policies to improve them. A record of demonstrated administrative ability and academic leadership.
  • Experience in institutional or academic program accreditation/re-accreditation.
  • Stature and exceptional achievement recognized by professional societies or other organizations.
At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish.

Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
