Help

-Assist with conducting seismological or geophysical investigations and to author reports of geotechnical engineering applications at various sites.
-Assists with the application or analysis of seismological or geophysical data to provide professional opinion to seismologists and engineers in support of seismic hazard analyses and engineering applications.
-Participates in communication and coordination activities with scientists and engineers.

RECENT GRADUATE ELIGIBLITY. You must meet one of the following:

  1. You have completed a qualifying bachelors, masters, professional, or doctorate degree within the previous two years as of the close date of this announcement.
  2. You are a Veteran and due to military obligation, you have completed a bachelors, masters, professional, or doctorate within six years of the announcement close date.
  3. You will obtain a bachelors, masters, professional, or doctorate and obtain transcripts (with conferred date) AND be able to start working no later than August 11, 2024. No exceptions.

CONVERSION: After successful completion of all program requirements, the Recent Graduate MAY be converted to a permanent position in the competitive service, but conversion is neither guaranteed or promised.

To be eligible for conversion, Recent Graduates must successfully complete at least 1-year of continuous service in addition to all requirements of the Program; demonstrate successful job performance; meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualifications for the position to which the Recent Graduate may be converted; and be recommended for conversion by their supervisor.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet BOTH the Basic Education Requirement and Additional Qualification Requirements for each grade level described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Basic Education Requirement:
To be eligible for consideration, you must first meet the Basic Education Requirement for this position, having a:
A. Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
OR
B. Combination of education and experience
-- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Qualification Requirement: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume.

GS-09:
To qualify at the GS-09, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-07 level in federal service having demonstrated experience applying geophysical and seismological principles or experience to assist in the completion of any of the following: probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, seismic source characterization, time histories or other geophysics investigations; assists in the resolution of geophysical and seismological problems in geophysical and seismological studies.

You could otherwise qualify on the basis of Education having 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
-or-
You may combine specialized experience and education to meet the minimum qualifications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week.

Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours.

Individuals serving in Recent Graduate appointments may be non-competitively converted to a permanent position with the Bureau of Reclamation upon successful completion of the program, but conversion is neither promised nor guaranteed. To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, these Recent Graduates must also:
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or National;
  • Have completed at least one year of continuous service;
  • Have demonstrated successful job performance as documented by a rating of record (or summary rating) of at least Fully Successful or equivalent;
  • Be recommended for conversion by their manager or supervisor;
  • Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted (which may include a positive education requirement); and
  • Meet all agency and program specific requirements as specified in their individual Participant Agreement.

Education

You will be required to provide official college transcripts to verify educational qualifications, if selected. An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic transcripts certified by notary publics are NOT official. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to reporting to work as a condition of employment. Failure to submit official transcripts may be grounds for dismissal or rescission of the job offer.

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs. Salary:
GS-09: $63,271 - $82,249.

You may be required to serve an initial probationary period. Current, permanent Federal employees who are selected from this announcement may be required to serve a probationary period.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Category rating and selection procedures will be used to evaluate applications from this announcement.
