Duties

Help
  • Participating with other Federal and State agencies, associations, industry leaders and professional societies to explain Forest Service objectives, policies, and program participation.
  • Promoting forest ecology, restoration of fire-adapted ecosystems, wildlife species conservation, habitat restoration, the protection of forest resources, and effective partnerships among cooperators.
  • Serves as a principal wildlife advisor and subject matter expert to the National Forests and to senior management
  • Development of programs, budgets, and procedures for wildlife conservation and habitat management.
  • Participating in budget development and execution as well as developing agreements and contracts to meet regional goals and objectives.
  • Providing leadership, allocating resources, and implementing activities to accomplish Forest Service multicultural organization direction and Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights requirements, goals, policies, and objectives
  • Supporting and participating in the Work Environment Continuous Improvement Process.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirement:

GS-0486
Degree: a major in a biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects such as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate; and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.

OR

A combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in a biological science (i.e. at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, 9 semester hours in botany or a related plant science as previously shown and appropriate experience or education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-13 level:
You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as as one or more of the following: Served as a wildlife program manager or technical expert responsible for coordinating and providing leadership in wildlife resource management with other resource uses such as range, timber, recreation, and/or watershed; developed and implemented programs for monitoring the effects of ongoing and proposed management activities on wildlife resources to meet regional and state standards; and/or designed and implemented complex studies to evaluate the effectiveness of wildlife resource measures and provided technical advice, training, and assistance to federal, state, and/or local agencies in a multi-state area.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Position will be located at Forest Office within Region 6 (Oregon and Washington). Final determination of the duty station will be made by the selecting official at the time of the job offer.
