Help
  • Prepare project studies determining the most suitable and economical structures based upon existing foundation conditions.
  • Responsible for accomplishment of unprecedented complex studies involving monitoring of hazardous ground water condition as related to environmental problems both military and civil projects.
  • Revise and adjust portions of design memoranda based on additional surface and subsurface field information, construction, and engineering changes.
  • Participate in and lead conferences with higher authority, making recommendations and giving explanation of various phases of projects to which assigned.
  • Participate in the planning of projects and accomplishes planning and execution of projects and studies such as remedial investigation and remedial design.

  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment, e.g. respirators, safety glasses, etc. provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to be included in the Medical Surveillance Program and attend 40 hours of Hazardous, Toxic, Radioactive, and Waste (HTRW) training and updates.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Basic Requirement for Geologist:

A. Degree:
Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.(Note:Acceptable experience may have been gained through geological field or laboratory work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some situations, professional scientific experience in other fields may be accepted in part as professional geological experience. Such experience must have been preceded by appropriate education in geology or by professional geological experience and must have contributed directly and significantly to the applicant's professional geological competence. To receive credit for geological experience obtained in positions that are not full-time professional geological positions, the applicant is responsible for indicating clearly the actual time or percentage of time devoted to geologic duties within such positions, and for giving adequate descriptions of the geologic functions.)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience (GS-12): One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Experience as a project leader for foundation design of assigned civil works projects, such as navigation lock, concrete or earth dam, hydroelectric powerhouse, pumping station, or Tunnels 2) Experience preparing project studies determining the most suitable and economical structures based upon existing foundation conditions 3) Experience accomplishing unprecedented complex studies involving monitoring of hazardous ground water conditions as related to environmental problems, both military and civil projects 4) Experience making reconnaissance surveys of proposed or potential sites for dams, power and pumping stations, and other structures for suitability of foundations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
