Duties

Help

This position is responsible for planning and developing public programs, private briefings, seminars, and other activities that analyze major political and economic issues to inform policymakers and the public. Responsibilities include:

Programmatic Research and Analysis 50%

  • Conducts specialized research on Canada, S. – Canadian relations, North American political economy, Canadian foreign policy at the intersection of U.S. national interests and related topics as needed for the planning and coordination of programmatic activities; research may also include economic, cultural and political relations type of topics.
  • Stays current on developments in Canada and U.S. policies in the region.
  • Finds and proposes speakers for public events.
  • Designs formats, publicizes events, and produces meeting reports.
  • Edits production of the program’s publications.
  • Develops, edits and co-authors articles to be published on the Internet and for Wilson Center publications in English.
  • Responds to and schedules media inquiries and coordinates interviews for the director and scholars.
  • Editor of programmatic newsletters.

Project and Program Management 25%

  • Provides financial oversight support to include budget preparation and review.
  • Coordinates and executes purchase orders, honoraria, contracts, and payments in consultation with the Program Director.
  • Works on internship program, to include review and selection of applicants and hired interns.
  • Works on logistical aspects of conferences, meetings, and other program events, including travel, with internal and external stakeholders to include partner organizations.
  • Manages the program’s social media platforms on a daily basis to ensure that they reflect up-to-date information about programmatic initiatives.
  • Works on the program public website, including the development of its contents.  
  • Works with Program Director to develop strategic partnerships.
  • With the consultation of the Director, coordinates the administration of outreach strategies and internal and external outreach initiatives affiliated with the program. 

Outreach and Partnerships – 25%

  • Helps with monitoring and evaluation of projects and the preparation of proposals for funding and preparing narrative reports at the conclusion of the grant period(s).
  • Managing outreach and research promotion through social media, email distribution lists, and reporting and dissemination through EveryAction.
  • Formalizing and growing relationships with outside institutional partners and implementing monitoring and evaluation of these relationships over time, recommending adjustment as needed.
  • Monitoring the output of other Wilson Center scholars and recommending opportunities for program collaboration with colleagues and participation in initiatives.
  • Participates in fund-raising visits in conjunction with Development staff.
  • In conjunction with External Relations office, leads on reception of high-level delegation to the Wilson Center.
  • Serves as liaison to external partners and other Wilson programs and scholars.
  • Leads the administration of the various fellowship and visiting scholar competitions by reading proposals and finding peer reviewers.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Requirement, specialized experience and the Key Core Competencies which will demonstrate your ability to perform the major responsibilities of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Specialized Experience:to qualify you must have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the IS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following types of duties:

  • Knowledge of and experience with politics, economics, history, culture, public policy, and related issues more broadly to identify, analyze, and recommend solutions to programmatic research initiatives related to Canada;
  • Skill in research methods and practices and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to produce written programmatic materials for publication;
  • Cultivate relationships and partnerships to expand the program’s public initiatives to identify and select speakers for public events;
  • Skill in designing, formatting, publicizing events;
  • Skill in writing grant proposals/fundraising initiatives. Individual helps prepare proposals for funding and narrative reports at the grant period(s)'s end.  Individual also participates in fund-raising efforts in conjunction with staff.

Ability to read and write in French is helpful, but not a requirement.

Additional information

The work is primarily sedentary; although, requires moving around to offices and/or to similar areas for meeting to conduct human resources business. May require standing in conjunction with travel and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a typical office setting that is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.
