Duties

Help

As an Auditor, you will be responsible for:

  • Identifying new areas for audit and planning new engagements that support the OIG strategic plan as well as detail the benefit of committing resources to performing the work.
  • Developing program guides that address the audit objectives and provide a clear path for developing convincing findings and actionable recommendations.
  • Exercising technical direction over the collection and analysis of data; and ensuring that evidence collected is sufficient, relevant, and reliable and properly documented and reviewed in the audit work papers.
  • Providing effective team leadership including: (1) proactively identifying and resolving problems that could impact project goals; (2) establishing priorities and adjusting schedules to accomplish the work timely; and (3) effectively utilizing resources.
  • Drafting audit reports that consolidate and integrate the work of others that provides a logical structure for results presentation, answering all the audit objectives and ensuring that all elements of a finding are supported.
  • Demonstrating effective communication by: (1) conducting and participating in conferences with key officials to obtain information and advise them of audit progress; and (2) collaborate both internally and externally to develop honest and productive relationships that contribute to the achievement of OIG goals.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet any basic requirements and specialized experience.

Basic Education Requirement:

Degree: auditing; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, public administration or accounting; OR

Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in Performance Auditing, or an equivalent combination of performance auditing experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional auditing knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following:

  1. A certificate as a Certified Internal Auditor or a Certified Public Accountant, obtained through written examination; OR
  2. Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in auditing or accounting, e.g., 15 semester hours.

Specialized Experience Statement:

GS-12: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector: demonstrate utilizing professional knowledge of accounting and auditing, and related practices, methods and techniques required to conduct performance audits; participates in the full range of duties to support engagement execution, including responsibility for engagements through design, data collection and analysis, message development, presenting portions of oral briefings to management on project status or findings and recommendations, and drafting segments of products that are technically complete and appropriately targeted to the audience, or similar experience; and working as an audit team member ensuring overall projects are accomplished within Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) and other established guidelines and timelines; OIG experience preferred.

GS-13: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector: demonstrate utilizing professional knowledge of accounting and auditing, and related practices, methods and techniques required to conduct performance audits; independently conducts the full range of duties to execute the engagement, including responsibility for executing engagements through design, data collection and analysis, message development, presenting oral briefings to management on project status or findings and recommendations, and drafting written products that are technically complete and appropriately targeted to the audience, or similar experience; and leading an audit team ensuring overall projects are accomplished within Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) and other established guidelines and timelines; OIG experience preferred.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME-IN-GRADE: If you are a current career or career-conditional federal employee applying for promotion under Merit Promotion you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks in positions at the next level lower than the position being filled.
