Summary

This position is established to serve as a maritime simulation operator and technician who provides computerized simulation systems support to USMMA faculty, students, and potential researchers. The employee is also thoroughly capable of providing services for and is responsible throughout the department assisting in all simulation labs (TRANSAS, Kongsberg, others) and electronic classrooms.

Duties

Help

As a Simulation Specialist, you will:

  • Under the direction of the Head, Department of Marine Transportation, Serve as the operator/technician responsible primarily for operation of the Full Bridge Mission (FMB) simulator also referred to as Visual Bridge Simulation System (VBSS), and additionally the Individual Bridge Simulator System (IBSS), the future Towing Visual Bridge Simulation System (TVBSS), and/or the future Mini-bridge Vessel Bridge Simulation System (MVBSS), the Liquid Cargo Simulator System (LCSS) and/or any other simulation systems at USMMA for which the Department of Marine Transportation is responsible.
  • Assist the course instructors with the simulators’ operation, as well as any troubleshooting and repairs during all periods of instruction, maintenance and/or research.
  • Be responsible for simulation, systems, laboratories, classrooms, and operations in the USMMA Deck Program, such as remote-control vessel operations, autonomous vessels operations and fleet control centers.
  • Work in conjunction with and/or assist the Marine Transportation Simulation Coordinator (MTSC), the Senior Simulation Specialist within the Department of information Technology (DOITSSS) and the Lead Bridge Resource Management Instructor (LBRM) in regard to the following but not limited to: Scheduling and performing installations, upgrades, maintenance as well as any major system changes.
  • Serve as the technical expert assisting with the creation of exercises, new scenarios and/or recreation of true grounding/allusion/collision accidents.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated mid-level professional possessing skills and experience in digital simulation systems for maritime or aviation sectors.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the Grade 12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience in the field of information technology (IT) and/or simulation systems. This includes hardware/software design, IT system support, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Experience in a full mission bridge maritime simulator in a technical position.
