As a Health Scientist (Bio-Informatics), you will:
Provide scientific advice, consultation and leadership in designing, coordinating and maintaining public health informatics project goals, objectives and priorities within the agency and in the general public health community
Collaborate and provide expert scientific advice to a variety of nation-wide and international organizations to synthesize, and implement informatics policies and directions for future development
Assist laboratory scientists (with varying levels of computational expertise) in the design of bioinformatics tools that support advanced data query and automation of data analysis and implement these tools within a public health information system, provide advice on the application of a variety of bioinformatics analysis tools used to compare and categorize microbial strains, isolates and communities
Work with IT specialists and other health informatics scientists and specialists in the development of quality control software and software programs to audit data integrity and evaluate data entry software reliability, collaborating with users within and outside the agency
Utilize database software, communications software, operating systems, statistical analysis systems, and mainframe software to ensure database and software are compatible with other applicable environmental, epidemiologic, and surveillance systems both within and outside the agency
Design, oversee, implement, and conduct scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve health system related problems
Participate with scientists and program consultants in various aspects of the study or survey design process, and other study support duties including analyzing and reporting of data and data dissemination to audiences
Analyze study or project implementation procedures for improvement

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://www.opm.gov/leaving/index.aspx?link=http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained.

To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level, which must include the following experience: performing bioinformatics analyses in public health program areas.
