Summary

As a Research Physical Scientist with the Climate and Radiation Laboratory, Earth Sciences Division, you will develop algorithms incorporating Machine Learning (ML) concepts to advance the retrieval of clouds, aerosol, and surface properties from space-based remote sensing observations. You will participate in the design of observational strategies that take advantage of ML-based retrieval algorithms for future NASA satellite missions such as the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS).

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Conduct research using satellite and other data to investigate whether traditional cloud, aerosol and surface remote sensing methods can be enhanced using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and techniques.
  • Conduct research using satellite and other data to investigate the feasibility of retrieving cloud, aerosol, and surface properties from space using ML algorithms and techniques.
  • Use ML algorithms and techniques to retrieve geophysical fields related to the state of cloud, aerosol and the surface that are currently beyond the capabilities of traditional remote sensing algorithms.
  • Develop ML algorithms that combine measurements at different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum towards separate or combined retrieval of cloud, aerosol, and surface properties.
  • Represent NASA and the Goddard Space Flight Center model in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments intercomparing and evaluating ML algorithms and techniques in the areas of cloud, aerosol, and surface remote sensing.
  • Represent NASA and the Goddard Space Flight Center in studies aiming to establish the requirements, scientific objectives, and observational strategies of future cloud, aerosol, and surface remote sensing missions.
  • Seek funding to support research activities via proposals to NASA, other federal funding agencies, or external organizations. Manage financial and technical aspects of the resulting projects and supervise the associated contractor personnel.
  • Archive datasets produced and tools developed in data and software repositories. Present research results in scientific meetings, peer-reviewed publications, and to the broader public, in accordance with open science principles.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level.

  • Conducting research using satellite or other remote sensing measurements for the purpose of developing remote sensing algorithms that retrieve cloud, aerosol, or surface properties, preferably employing Machine Learning (ML) concepts.
  • Applying such remote sensing algorithms to produce geophysical datasets that can be used for scientific investigations and applications.
  • Contributing to presentations at scientific conferences and/or publications in scientific journals where results from the type of research described above are documented.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level
  • Designing and conducting research using satellite or other remote sensing measurements for the purpose of developing remote sensing algorithms that retrieve cloud, aerosol, or surface properties, preferably employing Machine Learning (ML) concepts.
  • Applying such remote sensing algorithms to produce geophysical datasets that can be used for scientific investigations and applications.
  • Leading presentations at scientific conferences and publications in scientific journals where results from the type of research described above are documented.
  • Contributing to or leading proposals that fund projects in the area of remote sensing of cloud, aerosol, or surface properties.
Completion of a PhD in the area of atmospheric physics/sciences or a related geophysical discipline is desired.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
