Duties

Help

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, you will:

  • Support the Research Services' Special Project Team in completing large-scale and high-profile projects pertaining to records located across the organization.
  • Independently evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alerts supervisor or other designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten safety of records.
  • Improve the arrangement of records in accordance with higher-level established criteria and/or assesses records to provide input on how a series of records should be arranged.
  • Create technical and descriptive metadata.
  • Participate in the digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access and permanent retention following broad NARA guidance and procedures. Prepare records for digitization.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge regarding the large and complex variety of records series within NARA in order to locate requested material and re-file material released after the review and/or reference process is completed.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Obtain and use a government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
  • Designated and/or Random Drug Testing may be required.
  • The work is mostly sedentary; however the incumbentmust be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped ladders, maneuvering on catwalks, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience for the GS-05 grade level is defined as one year of experience at the GS-04 grade level, or equivalent, that is typically in or related to the position and experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience:

Communicating to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing; AND
Experience with using scanning equipment and/or preparing documents for digitization by creating metadata or reformatting records; AND
Following and referencing policy and procedures.

OR

You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school.

OR

You may qualify by a combination of experience and education.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
