Summary

This position is located with the USDA, Economic Research Service, Food Economics Division. The selectee is not required to report to a government office, however, the option to work in one of the Agency offices may be available.

In this position, you will be responsible for refining and utilizing forecasting methodology to produce ERS's monthly food Consumer Price Index forecasts and expected to monitor trends in retail and upstream food markets to understand the drivers of food prices.

Duties

Help
  • Initiates research ideas, developing testable hypotheses, selecting and cleaning the appropriate data, conducting statistical and econometric analyses, writing up the results, and disseminating the findings through ERS and academic publications.
  • Independently plans and conducts complex and difficult economic analyses and research related to food markets and food access.
  • Proposes research approaches and methods for testing hypotheses to include use of scientifically appropriate and rigorous economic theory, relevant data, and appropriate empirical methods.
  • Participates in and/or leads research projects and cooperates with other team members in the preparation and publication of policy-relevant research topics.
  • Collaborates with outside experts to research and communicate difficult concepts and findings to officials responsible for public policy.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree:economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience:courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:

GS-13:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting agricultural and environmental economics research; proposing research approaches and methods for testing hypotheses to include use of scientifically appropriate and rigorous economic theory, relevant data, and appropriate empirical methods; and using models in applied work.

GS-14:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting agricultural and environmental economics research using agriculture or environmental models; proposing research approaches and methods for testing hypotheses to include use of scientifically appropriate and rigorous economic theory, relevant data, and appropriate empirical methods and publishing in the peer-reviewed literature; and applying, developing, or leading agricultural models in applied work.

GS-15:
Specialized Experience:Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-15 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-14 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting agricultural and environmental economics research by developing and using agriculture and environmental models; proposing and leading research project that test hypotheses to include use of scientifically appropriate and rigorous economic theory, relevant data, and appropriate empirical methods, and multiple publications in the peer-reviewed literature; and leading the use of agricultural models in applied work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
