Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Reviews and evaluates news sources and developments to identify items for coverage and updates. Communicates with other editors and staff members to ensure comprehensive, timely coverage and necessary updates.
  2. Works closely with other parts of VOA, such as Central News, Graphics and the Africa Division's Web Editor, to make the French-to-Africa digital platforms as attractive and compelling to an audience as possible.
  3. Writes news-related stories for use on the digital and social media platforms. Uses a variety of sources, including area experts, daily newspapers or magazines, direct sources, witnesses, etc., to research stories.
  4. Prepares integrated, highly-targeted, well-balanced scripts, web or multimedia program segments, or digital presentations that captures the interest and attention of the audience.
  5. Quickly and accurately writes feature stories on a variety of subjects for a variety of platforms. Materials are typically complex and sensitive and may involve controversial subjects.

  • This is a public trust position-. If selected, this position requires the completion of the SF-86.
  • Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a background investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The background investigation may include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.
  • This position is not covered by a Union Agreement.
  • This position has been designated supervisory requiring that the selectee serve on an initial appointment as a supervisor or manager serve a one-year probationary period.
  • The full performance grade level for this position is GS-13.

Qualifications

Screen Out Factor: Applicant must have fluency in both English and French languages that enables you to speak, read, write, report, and translate in both languages. This language screen out factor MUST be listed in your resume to receive consideration.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the GS-12 or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Experience that is typically in or related to writing, editing, producing, and distributing reports for digital (web, mobile) and other platforms.

  • Ability to combine a variety of sources and reports into a singular, coherent news story on digital platforms.
  • Thorough knowledge of project management, social media and video production.
  • Ability to organize, plan, schedule and deliver multiple projects on deadline.
  • Knowledge of all phases of social programming and distribution on major platforms.
  • Knowledge of francophone Africa, its history, economics, culture and socio-political development.

Education is not required for this grade level. It cannot be used for qualification purposes.
